Jungle came out of the UK’s rave explosion at the turn of the ’90s - breakbeats sped up and chopped, reggae sound-system bass, and a pirate radio network that built the genre’s entire broadcast infrastructure from scratch because nobody else would. Kool FM 94.5, launched out of Clapton/Hackney in November 1991, became what music historian Simon Reynolds called “London’s ruling pirate station” - and it’s still on air today.
