Started in 1996 by Tony Colman and Chris Goss, Hospital Records is based in East London and runs a publishing company and the worldwide events brand Hospitality.
Some labels are known for a single sound. Hospital Records is known for a family of them. Based in East London, it has put out liquid, rolling and darker drum and bass for three decades, and it has built a worldwide brand for its parties.
Wikipedia says the label was started in 1996 by Tony Colman, who records as London Elektricity, and Chris Goss. It has grown to become one of the best known labels within UK dance music. Primarily releasing drum and bass, it has been home to artists including Netsky, Camo and Krooked, Logistics, Nu:Tone, Metrik, Fred V and Grafix, High Contrast and S.P.Y.
In Shoreditch, East London, Hospital runs a publishing company called Songs in the Key of Knife and its worldwide events brand, Hospitality. Until the end of 2019 it also ran an experimental label called Med School Music. The label's structure shows how a record company can grow beyond records into a set of related activities that support its artists.
Hospitality is the label's event brand. Drum and bass events involving a set of artists from the label are often advertised as Hospitality events. For a fan, the name works like a promise: a night built around the label's sound, with its artists on the bill. In this magazine's coverage you will find Hospitality listings regularly, because the brand is one of the most active in the scene.
In 2026 the label marks its thirtieth year. As we report elsewhere in this issue, that includes a Hospital30 box set of five white vinyl 12 inch records, with a release date given by the label's shop as 6 November, and a Hospital30 night in Brighton on 23 October.
Thirty years is a long time in independent music. A few things stand out. The label has kept its focus on the music while building a brand around events. It has supported its artists across several stages of their careers. And it has managed to stay recognisable while changing the details of its sound, from early liquid records to the wide range of styles on its roster today.
If you want to explore, begin with the artists named above, then listen to the label's own SoundCloud account to hear what it is releasing now. The link between the early records and the new ones is easier to hear than you might expect.
