The Sound That Never
Assimilated

1 / 7 · The break

It began with a stolen breakbeat. The six-second Amen drum fill, lifted from a 1969 Washington D.C. funk record, became the backbone of a genre that would redefine what electronic music could be. By 1994, they called it drum and bass.

Three decades on, the scene has fractured into an ecosystem that runs from jazz-inflected liquid DnB to the clinical aggression of neurofunk, from crowd-ready jump-up to the structural minimalism of South London's deep rollers.

Goldie's Timeless, Shy FX's Original Nuttah, Calibre's two decades of prolific liquid output: these are not footnotes to electronic music history. They are its spine.

Drum and bass was never interested in behaving itself. It could be beautiful and violent within the space of a single record, soulful one moment and completely alien the next. That contradiction became its strength.

Inside The Modern
D&B Movement

For more than three decades, drum & bass has remained one of the most influential forces in electronic music. What began in the UK’s underground rave culture has grown into a worldwide movement, shaping club culture, festivals and production techniques across every corner of dance music.

The genre’s greatest strength has always been its ability to evolve, from soulful liquid rollers and cinematic atmospherics to heavyweight dancefloor weapons and cutting-edge neurofunk, without losing the energy that made it unique in the first place.

What keeps it moving is how the scene is built. Record shops, radio, promoters, small labels and bedroom producers still feed one another, and a tune can go from a laptop to a packed room in a matter of weeks. That short distance between making a record and testing it on a crowd is a big part of why the sound keeps renewing itself.

The range is wide. Rollers sit deep and hypnotic, neurofunk turns cold and mechanical, jump up goes straight for the dancefloor and liquid brings melody and soul. One night can take in all of it, and the best DJs move between them without losing the room.

It is also why the audience is so broad. People who were there at the start stand beside people who found the music on a playlist last year. Festivals, club residencies, radio shows and online communities give drum & bass more ways in than at any point in its history, and D-N-B.CO.UK exists to follow all of it.

In 2026, the scene is stronger than ever.Independent labels continue to discover new talent, established artists remain at the forefront of innovation, and dedicated communities around the world are proving that drum & bass is far more than a genre, it is a culture built on creativity, progression and connection.

Nicky Blackmarket

“The baseline of modern UK electronic club culture wasn’t written in lines of code — it was forged in the heat of Soho basement vinyl shops. If you don’t respect the foundational weight of the plates, the whole ecosystem collapses.”

Nicky Blackmarket stands as a foundational architect of the global drum & bass movement. Operating from the counter of the legendary Blackmarket Records on Soho’s D’Arblay Street throughout the 1990s, he sat precisely at the epicentre of production, curation, and raw distribution — dictating the physical flow of test pressings and exclusive dubplates to the selectors who structured the sound of modern jungle.

In this definitive sit-down, the legendary pioneer tracks his relentless runtime behind the wheels of steel — from the pressure points of the original warehouse explosion to fostering fresh underground talent for tomorrow’s sound systems.
